The ‘secure’ MultiMedia Card (SMC) is a Flash ROM device which provides removable mass storage for consumer electronic equipment. Its innovative feature is that it has embedded Java Card™ Smart Card silicon which allows the data stored in the Flash ROM memory to be secured in a very flexible and powerful way. Helixion has developed a number of applications aimed at utilising the unique properties of the SMC to provide valuable functionality. The SMC product portfolio has been specifically developed for a Java Card™ environment compliant with the Global Platform™ specification.
HelixWIM is a Java Card™ software application that runs within the Smart Card component of the SMC and provides adaptable security protection to the information that moves in and out of the associated ‘Flash’ memory within the same device.
HelixWIM can secure any transactions by placing encryption and digital signatures to authorise accesses to the secured content of the Flash device. Data integrity and confidentiality is guaranteed using authentication, digital signatures and encryption. The file structure of the HelixWIM J330 has been designed according to PKCS#15 (standard for the definition and storage of objects for the public key cryptography).
It provides full X.509 v3 certificate handling.
The EMV standard for smartcard applications has been created by the leading card associations (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) to ensure interoperability among smartcard payment systems. The card associations have made the transition to smartcards a strategic priority and EMV cards are now being rolled out in many countries. It is intended to complement the other security and management offerings from Helixion, such as Digital Rights Management (DRM), to offer a client–side payment function. |
