TARESS™

The TARESS™ solution is a security software platform that provides a standard way to access the powerful security attributes of the new plug-in/removable, secure versions of MMC & SD memory cards referred to as Secure MultiMedia Cards (SMC) and SmartSD. By enabling these devices with the TARESS™ software agents, a highly secure point-to-point communications channel is set up and maintained with and through the mobile terminal to a network host.

Currently, content security is driven from the network or host side using the SIM - albeit to a very limited extent. The TARESS™ solution, however, means that, for the first time, different types of mobility businesses can gain a significant measure of control over the mobile terminal using TARESS™ enabled SMC/SmartSD devices. Effectively this will allow the different parties to control and manage their own Content data in a standard and secure way with the flexibility to interface with a broad spectrum of host-based solutions. In the mobile terminal, TARESS™ implements what Helixion terms SIM Middleware to hide the differences in phone environments.

The benefits of taking ownership of the removable Secure MultiMedia Card enabled with the TARESS™ platform include:

  • USIM, SIM and/or ISIM authentication (or stronger) for GSM/VOIP-over-WiFi converged mobile communications.
  • Powerful mobile device branding & personalisation.
  • Secure mass storage and distribution of Content.
  • User Personal Identity/Mobile Commerce.
  • Separate means of authentication to that of the SIM.
  • Allows SIM functionality to "morph" partially or completely to the SMC device for Convergence security needs.
  • Allows Point-of-Sale subscriber value-add such as pre-loaded games, customised graphics etc. in addition to a general user storage capability.
  • Security infrastructure provides powerful pre-storage encryption and pre-load decryption of data.
  • It supports unique client-side Digital Rights Management attributes, especially those of Superdistribution where Content is taken out of the terminal environment.
  • TARESS™ can evolve to support Device Management requirements and standards evolving under OMA.
  • By minimising the use of the mobile phone environment other than as a runtime environment, the very significant issues of mobile phone interoperability are greatly reduced in key areas of storage, security and rights management.
  • It cleverly splits the distinguishable role of the subscriber security (the SIM) from the separate role of a high-bandwidth, high-capacity, secure, removable storage device.
  • Lastly and possibly most significantly, it offers the Mobility company the choice to own and manage his Content and the rights around that Content in a much cleaner and streamlined way.
